Teacher development in figures

Higher non-university level

1. The country has 1,649 educational units at Higher Non-University Level Which stand for 3,4 % of the 47,881 units corresponding for the four levels of teaching.

2. 956 educational units which represent 58 % of the total, belong to the state sector, and the remaining 42 % to the private sector. The participation of the latter at this level is bigger than in other, since it is 39 % in the secondary and it hardly reaches 14,2 % in the primary.

3. The 329,072 students enrolled at Higher Non-University Level stand for 3,7 % of the total enrolment corresponding to the four levels teaching.

4. Seven students out of 10 in the Higher Non-University Level, attend educational units in the state sector and only 3 in the private sector.

5. Among the 591,806 in-service teachers all over the country, 43,921 (7,4 %) belong to the Higher Non-University Level.

The teacher training modality

6. Teacher training is basic at this level. It is exclusively given by 50 % of the units, against 26 % dealing only with techno-professional training and 18 % dealing with both (6 % of the Higher Non-University Level educational units have no reported on the kind of training the give).

7. There are 1,122 educational units in the country devoted to teacher training. Its responsibility lies basically on the State since 64 % of the educational units belong to this sector, while 48,7 % of the techno-professional training is private.

8. Among the 43,921 in-service teachers of the Higher Non-University Level, 30,214 (68 %) belong to the teacher training modality.

9. Most teacher trainers are middle aged. The percentage under 30 years old (14,3 %) is low. In other educational levels the percentages of young teachers are higher: 41,6 % in the initial level, 30,5 % in the primary, and 24,6 % in the secondary.

10. Three quarters of the teachers working at the teacher training modality are females: 74,24 % against 25,76 % males.

11. 42 % of the teachers in the teacher training modality have less than 10 years seniority, 29,2 % between 11 and 20, 20.9 % between 21 and 30, while 6,8 % have more than 30 years seniority.

12. More than 80 % of the teachers in this modality have completed the higher level: 47 % completed higher non-university level 29 % university level and 5 % completed post-graduate studies.

13. More than ¾ of the teacher trainers have got methodological training. Among those who have not got it, university graduates are a significant number.

14. 84.6 % of the teachers in this modality give courses.

15. 45.3 % of the teachers in this modality work in only one institution 33 % in two and the rest in three or more.

The fact that more than 50 % of the teachers work in more than one institution, is typical in this modality. Only 18,2 % of the teachers in the initial level, 19,1 % in the primary and 35,6 % in the secondary are in this situation.

16. Almost half the teachers have a time-table of twelve hours a week.

The Higher Non-University level in the Formal Education System

There are 1,649 educational units working at Higher Non-University Level (HNU). They are attended by 329,072 students and 43,921 teachers work in them.

The level includes 7,4 % of the total in-service teaching staff in the country (591,806) and 3,7 % of the students enrolled in the formal education system (8,890,679).

There are 7.5 students per in-service teacher. There are 9 students for every teacher giving courses.

The teacher training modality at higher non-university level

2.1. Educational Units

There are 1,122 educational units providing teacher training all over the country. They stand for 68 % of the total offer at the Higher Non-University Level.

Half the educational units of the level devote only to teacher training, 18 % does it simultaneously with another kind or other kinds of training, 26 % provides technico-professional training and/or another type of training.

The state sector offer of teacher training outnumbers the private one. 64 % (718) of the units which train teachers belong to the state and 36 % (404) are private. This is so in most jurisdictions; except in Buenos Aires (Capital Federal), Córdoba, Santa Fe and Tucumán where private educational units outnumber state ones.

2.2. Teachers

There are 30,214 teacher trainers all over the country. They stand for 68,8 % of the number of teachers at the Higher non-University Level and 5,1 % of the in-service teachers.

Teacher's profile and their insertion at institutions

3.1. Age

Most teachers in this modality are middle aged. The percentage of young teachers is low: only 14,3 % are less than 30 years old. This characteristic makes a difference between the teachers of this modality and those of other levels. (41.6 % in the initial level, 30,5 % in the primary and 24,6 % in the secondary where teachers are less than 30 years old).

3.2. Sex

Three quarters of the teachers in the teacher training modality are females: 74,24 % against 25,76 % males.

3.3. Seniority

42 % of the teachers have up to 10 years seniority in teaching (3,0 % have less than a year), 29.2 % have between 11 and 20, 20.8 % have between 21 and 30 while 6,8 % have been teaching for more than 30 years.

3.4. Educational Level

More than 80 % of the teachers who train teachers have completed the higher level. Most of them were trained at the same level they are working (46,9 %). 28.5 % were trained at university and 5 % have completed post graduate studies. 13 % reached only secondary level.

3.7 Amount of Institution they are working at

In connection with teachers of other levels, teachers of the teacher training modality are the highest percentage working simultaneously at more than one institution. On the order hand, 81,2 % in the initial level, 80,9 % in the primary, 64,4 ^% in the secondary and 53,2 % (on the whole) in higher non-university level work at only one institution. In the teacher training modality only 45,3 % have this characteristic, the rest work in two or more institutions.

3.8. Time-Table

At Higher Non-University Level teacher training, more than 50 % of the teachers all over the country have a time-table of up to 12 periods a week.
